What happens during the first visit to BUP?
After you contact us, we book your first appointment over the telephone or by post. Who attends the first appointment varies depending on the problem you've described. Sometimes we meet the parents alone, sometimes the child in question, sometimes the whole family.
When you arrive at the clinic, sign in at the reception and then sit in the waiting room. After a short while, the therapist or therapists you are to see will come and take you to a counselling room. A common way to begin the session is for you to explain why you wanted to come. You can tell us as much or as little as you like. We create an environment in which important things can be said and we ensure everyone is heard. We adapt the session and provide the opportunity to express things in different ways depending on needs. Children, for example, can often express themselves best by showing, drawing and playing.
The first session will probably take about an hour; sometimes a little less, sometimes a little more. Towards the end, you decide whether you want to meet again.
