Can BUP report crimes to the police?
If a patient tells us that they've committed a crime, we have no obligation to report it to the police. We're only obligated to report to the police if we know that someone is planning to commit a serious crime.
However, under the law we have the right to report to the police if the crime is serious enough to result in a prison sentence of at least one year.
Whether we report a suspected crime to the police depends on what the patient wants us to do, what is best for the patient and what type of crime it is.
